The ERO Charitable Foundation proudly supported the Colorado 14ers Initiative in its mission to preserve the natural integrity of Colorado’s 54 14,000-foot peaks through active stewardship and public education. The Foundation approved two separate grants for a 5-year habitat restoration and trail realignment on Mt. Elbert, the tallest 14er in Colorado. A section of trail known as the “cat claw” is subject to severe erosion, which was having negative impacts on local ecosystems. The Colorado 14ers Initiative recruited volunteers to implement check steps to slow the process of erosion and stabilize the soil to allow native plants to establish and plant native plugs and seeds to expedite this process. Portions of the trail were closed to allow time for restoration. This restoration will pave the way for trail realignments on Mt. Elbert, which will be designed for sustainable long-term use, supporting the Foundation’s goals of restoring degrading habitat.
