Since 1992, Gretchen, a biologist specializing in botany, has worked with National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA), Clean Water Act Section 404, Endangered Species Act, and uranium mining environmental compliance. She has also worked with rural agricultural improvement issues, monitoring and reclamation of disturbed lands, and native seed projects.

SUMMARY OF EXPERIENCE

NEPA Compliance. Gretchen assisted with various NEPA documents including the Department of Energy (DOE) Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) for remediation of the Moab Project site, floodplain and wetland assessments for DOE’s Shiprock and Moab sites, and Environmental Assessments (EAs) for groundwater remediation at various Uranium Mill Tailings Remedial Action (UMTRA) sites.

Wetlands. Gretchen has been involved with several aspects of Section 401 and 404 compliance in Colorado and Utah, including wetland delineation and permitting, mitigation wetland planning and monitoring, and annual reports. The projects have involved small, local agricultural wetlands as well as large construction and mining projects. She has conducted stream assessments for stream health and management effects, and wetland characterizations. Gretchen has also planned, implemented, and supervised wetland revegetation projects.

Threatened and Endangered Species. Gretchen has conducted surveys for federally-listed and sensitive plant and animal species in western Colorado and the Four Corners area, including clay-loving buckwheat, Mesa Verde fishhook cactus, Uintah Basin hookless cactus, Naturita milkvetch, Grand Junction milkvetch, Canyonlands lomatium, Colorado desert parsley, bald eagle, and Southwestern willow flycatcher.

Vegetation and Weed Management. Gretchen has prepared weed management plans and conducted weed surveys for wildfire areas and reclaimed sites. She also wrote revegetation and seeding specifications for mine reclamation, and supervised revegetation contract implementation. Gretchen has conducted ecosystem monitoring for vegetation improvement treatments, reclamation sites, and fire areas; and range trend monitoring on grazing allotments. She has supervised a seed crew to locate and gather native plant seed sources on the Uncompahgre Plateau.
